Overview
Frostburg State University has a responsibility to prepare students to
live and to function effectively in a complex global society. The embracing
of liberal learning is a fundamental element in preparing our students
for their life beyond college, for among the purposes of liberal learning
is a capacity for insight into how different people think, feel behave,
and express their values.
Therefore, our program of general education requires
that each student enroll in a course that explores issues of identity
and difference. Identity may be defined as the dynamic process of psychological
and cultural self-conception by individuals, both separately and as members
of social and cultural groups, while difference (or diversity) is best
interpreted as the range of significant differences among people eligible
for participation in, contribution to, and/or benefit from an activity
or experience.
