Recommended Books
The literature about student learning assessment is constantly
expanding, as theories are refined, concepts are explored, and experiences
are shared. The following books are valuable tools in both understanding
and implementing student learning assessment.
Angelo, T., and Cross, K. (1993). Classroom assessment techniques:
A handbook for college teachers. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
The seminal work in classroom assessment methods,
this book should be considered “required reading” for any assessment administrator
to provide a deeper understanding of how assessment can and should occur
in the classroom.
Lyons, R., McIntosh, M, & Kysilka,
A. (2003). Teaching college in an age of accountability. Boston:
Allyn and Bacon.
This volume provides, for those administrators of
student learning assessment programs who have limited or no classroom
experience, invaluable insight
into issues facing faculty as they work to incorporate assessment strategies
into their teaching and classroom management.
Maki, P. (2004). Assessing
for learning: Building a sustainable commitment across the institution. Sterling, VA: Stylus Publishing.
Dr. Maki explains in the preface that “this book focuses on the ‘bigger
picture’ of student learning”; i.e., assessment within the
contexts of both program and institutional needs. The worksheets and
institutional examples are very helpful.
Mason, E., & Bramble, W.
(1997). Research in education and the behavioral sciences. Madison,
Wisconsin: Brown and Benchmark
Publishers.
Designed as a text for graduate students, this book
is particularly helpful to administrators who have been assigned
the task of implementing an
assessment program but have not been engaged in educational research
on a regular and consistent basis. Of significant value is its assistance
in “learning the language” of educational research.
Pellegrino, J., Chudowsky, N., & Glaser, R., Eds.
(2001). Knowing what students know: The science and design
of educational assessment. Washington, DC: National Academy Press.
Current advances in the cognitive sciences and their
implications on student learning assessment are explored. Of particular
interest
is the discussion of assessment design and the use of emerging
technologies in assessment.
Suskie, L. (2004). Assessing
student learning: A common sense guide. Boston: Anker Publishing.
This book is exactly what its title implies: a logically-organized,
easily-understood resource that outlines every component of student
learning assessment
in a straightforward manner. If your budget allows for only one book,
this should be the one you purchase.
Walvoord, B. (2004). Assessment
clear and simple: A practical guide for institutions, departments,
and general education. San Francisco:
Jossey-Bass.
This book is another excellent “how to do it” guide on assessment.
Chapters addressed to the specific assessment issues faced by institution-wide
planners, departments and programs, and administrators of general education
offer excellent suggestions.
