Plant Facts - Virginia bluebells, Mertensia virginica

  • Called Virginia bluebells because the flowers are shaped like little blue bells.
  • Pollinated by bumblebees that must hover because they are too big to land on the flower and by butterflies that are graceful enough to perch on the petals while collecting nectar.
  • Likes to grow in moist soils near swamps and bodies of water.
