Ethnobotany Major at Frostburg State University

In Fall 2007 , FSU began offering a major program in ethnobotany. Currently, no other higher education program in the continental United States offers a major or even a concentration in ethnobotany.

This interdisciplinary program provides students with a fundamental understanding of how the environment and culture are interrelated. Students gain a strong educational background firmly rooted in science and are prepared with the basic courses required for admission into advanced degree programs.

The curriculum includes introductory courses in the areas of biology, chemistry, math, botany, cultural perspectives, and biogeography. Students then have the option of selecting one of three tracks: pharmacological ethnobotany, biogeography, or cultural perspectives. For a complete curriculum listing, click here.

Graduates of the program have a wide range of options for employment including work as an herbalist, consulting in medical and health settings, work with plant nurseries, herbariums, or botanical gardens, environmental consulting, Peace Corps, naturalist, and social work positions.
