Call for Papers for Oral & Poster Presentations Open Until April 20th

The conference symposium will be held June 4th-7th and include presentations on Appalachian, Himalayan and European mountains Ethnobotany.  The Open Science Network in Ethnobiology will sponsor a special symposium on Ethnobiology Education.  Abstracts are accepted in areas related to economic botany of mountain peoples and ethnobiology education.

On-Campus Lodging Registration and Transportation Registration

The 53rd Annual Meeting of The Society for Economic Botany will gather the first week in June at Frostburg State University in Maryland.  The theme for the meeting will be the Ethnobotany of Mountain Cultures.  The conference will begin Saturday, June 2nd with a photography workshop.  Sunday, June 3rd, will include pre-conference fieldtrips to Dr. Jim Duke’s Green Farmacy Garden and a Nature Conservancy boreal bog.  Sunday evening will feature an ACES sponsored artisan exhibit and entertainment by Sparky and Rhonda Rucker.  

Additional events include the opening reception of Celebrate Forests photography exhibition by Josh Birnbaum, a student mixer sponsored by the United Plant Savers, and a presentation by Dr. W.Hardy Eshbaugh sponsored by Allegany College of Maryland.

Trip Planning 

Getting to Frostburg:

Driving Directions, Frostburg will be providing shuttles from the Pittsburgh International Airport Transportation Registration, please keep in mind that we are 2-hours from the airport with no available public transportation, plan to arrive early to not miss your ride. Additionally a shuttle is available from Baltimore Airport: BWI

Places to Stay:

We encourage you to stay on campus as public transportation in Frostburg is very limited.

On-campus lodging: Lodging Registration

  • in Cambridge Hall, single and double-rooms available. Cambridge Hall features air-conditioned cluster-style rooms with semi-private baths and micro-fridges.  Cambridge Hall is centrally located near meeting facilities and is an older dorm.
  • Additional on-campus housing available at Edgewood Commons, just a short walk (1/4 mile) to the meeting site.  Edgewood Commons provides suite-like rooms with private baths in a modern facility.

Off-campus lodging

  • CouchSurfing organized by Frostburg Students
  • Transportation will be provided to conference attendees staying at Savage River Lodge a 20 minute drive about 10 miles from campus.  Space is limited to 18 private cabins, early reservations are suggested, 301-689-3200.
  • Visitors with their own cars can stay in local hotels, cabins, and camping facilities. Camping is available in neighboring Maryland State Parks: 10 miles from New Germany, 14 miles from Rocky Gap, 25 miles from Big Run State Park, 27 miles from Deep Creek Lake, 29 miles from Swallow Falls, and 31 miles from Herrington Manor State Parks.   Camping is also available in Frostburg at the Trail Inn. Hotels within 4 miles of campus include: Hampton Inn, Days Inn, and the Hotel Gunter.  Upscale accommodations within 10 miles include: Rocky Gap Lodge and 30 miles: Wisp Resort.

About the Conference

The Society for Economic Botany brings together scholars, researchers, educators, practitioners, activists and students to learn all kinds of uses that various cultures have made of plants, from medicines to food to vessels. The theme of this year conference is the Ethnobotany of Mountain Cultures. 

Food:

Celebrating Appalachian Food Traditions with Local Food: soup beans & cornbread, collard greens & black-eyed peas, red beans & rice, stewed cabbage, goat cheese, Maryland crab cakes, country ham & sawmill gravy, BBQ, and more.  Meals will be topped off with bread pudding with bourbon sauce & sweet potato pie.  Pack your elastic waist shorts or your bike and hiking shoes.

Monday, June 4th

An Appalachian WelcomeUnited Plant Savers will present about the At-Risk List and Medicinal Plant Conservation.

Dancing the night away at the Student Mixer on Monday night to traditional bluegrass music. Hear about opportunities to be involved with United Plant Savers.
