Peace Work in Honduras
Summer Session 2005

This program is offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at FSU in conjunction with the Peacework International Volunteer Program. Beginning May 23, students will have the opportunity to take part in a four week program, earn three FSU credits, and travel to Honduras in Central America. Students will be able to improve their Spanish comprehension and speaking abilities while at the same time experience the distinct cultural and social realities of a Central American country. The course provides students with an opportunity to work on a volunteer project in La Cieba on the northern coast of Honduras.

Dates: The dates for 2005 are May 23 - June 17. In the future the program will be offered every two years during intersession. Students will spend one week studying intensive Spanish in Frostburg, followed by two week in La Ceiba in Honduras working in an orphanage. The final week will be spent in Frostburg.

Course Offerings: This program is directed to Spanish majors and minors who have taken SPAN 330 and another 300 level Spanish course (although students with any experience of Spanish may speak with the instructor to determine suitable fluency). The course that will be offered is SPAN 499 'Peace Work in Honduras' (3 credits).

Costs: The total cost for the program, including FSU tuition, fees, study abroad administrative fee, the Peacework fee, lodging, meals, and round-trip airfare is $2508. This fee is subject to change and does not include personal expenses, books, health insurance, and any independent travel while in the Honduras.

Accommodation and Course Schedule: Students will take classes at FSU from May 23-27. Students will be in Honduras from May 29 - June 11 working in an orphanage and living in a youth hostel. More information about lodging and meals will be provided to those who register for the program.

How to Apply: Come by the CIE to pick up an application form or attend any CIE information session at the Fuller House. Students who wish to take part in the program must apply to the Center for International Education.
