Study in Ecuador through Augustana College, Illinois
Summer session only

Each summer since 1985, FSU students have had the opportunity to take part in either an intensive Spanish language course or a Teaching English (TEFL) certificate course in Cuenca, Ecuador at the Centro de Estudios Interamericanos (CEDEI). The Spanish language program is co-sponsored by Augustana College in Illinois. Cuenca is located south of Quito, high in the Andes. Students are able to take part in several excursions from Cuenca to sites of interest in Ecuador and Peru.

Dates: In 2006 the Spanish course is a nine week full immersion course, beginning June 7th and finishing August 23rd. The TEFL Certificate course is a six week course that begins in June 7th and ends July 12th. Other summer courses are available through CEDEI (details available from their website).

Course Offerings: Students on the Spanish program normally register for nine credits (three classes), and may choose from Basic to Advanced Spanish, Women Writers, Contemporary Latin American Society, Latin American History, and Indigenous Cultures of the Andes. Course offerings may differ slightly from year to year. Students on the English course complete 114 hours in subjects related to 'Methods and Materials of Teaching ESL/EFL.' At the end of the program they are given a TEFL certificate which allows them to teach English as a foreign language.

Costs: Costs will vary, but in general the overall program cost is approximately $2,925 for the TEFL course, and $5,600 for the Spanish program. This price includes housing and meals (except during field trips - see below), round trip airfare from Miami (not included in TEFL costs), field trips, airport transfers and taxes, travel assistance and basic medical insurance. Students register directly with Augustana College for the Spanish course. The price does not include passport, ISIC card, additional travel or the FSU study abroad administrative fee ($150). Students may also take part in an 11-day study tour in Peru at the end of the Spanish program.

Accommodation: Students live with Ecuadorian families during their stay in Cuenca, speaking Spanish and experiencing Latin American culture first hand. Meals are taken at home with the family, although students may buy meals out as well.
