Study Abroad Home > Programs > University of Ghana, West Africa North Carolina State University sends students from all over the US to the University of Ghana in West Africa every other year for a six week course in either the humanities and social sciences, or in art and design. This program is co-sponsored by FSU's African-American Studies program and its Director, Dr. Robert Moore. Students who study art and design are based in the College of Art in Kumasi, while students who study humanities and social sciences are based in Accra. Dates: The program normally takes place in June and July for six weeks. The next program will be offered in 2005. Course Offerings: Social Sciences and Humanities students take two three-credit NC State courses taught by both NC State faculty and Univ. of Ghana faculty. Students are required to take 'Ghanaian Culture and Society' plus one other course. Art and Design students take two three-credit courses as well, one of which must be 'African Art, History and Culture.' A non-credit course in the native Twi language is also available for all students. An additional course in Science and Technology may be available as well. Costs: Program costs vary each year and will be approximately $5000-5300. The price includes tuition, accommodation and meals (see below), field excursions with faculty, round trip airfare from New York to Accra, and insurance. Additional costs include books, local transportation, additional meals, passport, and inoculations. Financial aid is available. Accommodation: Social Science students will be housed at the International Dormitory on the University of Ghana-Legon campus, in hotels (during excursions), and will stay at least one-week with a Ghanaian family in the Accra area. All breakfasts and dinners are included in the program fee. Art and Design students are based in Kumasi. All students will have full access to the university's facilities and resources. Students who wish to take part in the program must apply to FSU by early February. NC State deadline is normally the first week in February, although late applications may be taken if space is available. |
