Abroad Scholarships
General Scholarship Information: Students may
apply for a number of scholarships which they may put towards their study
abroad experience (see below). Remember to meet application deadlines
(usually March 1st for the following fall semester). The FSU
Financial Aid/ Scholarship brochure is available in the Financial
Aid Office. It contains descriptions of the institutional, departmental
and outside scholarships which are offered each year to FSU students.

Scholarship search on the web: The following links
lead to forms where students can search for scholarships:
CIE Scholarships: Students who are accepted on
to FSU sponsored or affiliated study abroad programs may apply for a scholarship
from the CIE Office. The deadline for intersession and spring semester
is 15 October, and for summer session, fall semester and the academic
year the deadline is 15 March. Scholarships are awarded in the amounts
of $500 and $1,000. Students may pick up application forms from the CIE
Office in the Fuller House or download an application below.
Eligibility Requirements:
1. A completed scholarship application (including letters
of recommendation and transcript(s) must be received by the deadline
set by the Director of the Center for International Education.
2. The applicant must be a full-time, degree-seeking
student who has completed at least 24 credit hours (18 credit hours
for graduate students) prior to the study abroad experience.
3. The student must be a matriculating student at the
time of the study abroad experience (exceptions made for summer programs).
4. The student must have submitted a completed application
to a credit-bearing study abroad program.
5. The student must have submitted a completed application
form to the Center for International Education and must have received
a letter of acceptance into the program.
6. The student must have a minimum cumulative grade
point average of 3.0.
Selection Criteria:
In awarding the scholarships, the International Education Council
(IEC) may consider:
1. GPA, with due consideration given to the degree
of academic rigor of courses
2. Quality of the essay
3. Financial need (based on summary information provided
by the Financial Aid Office)
4. Duration and number of credit hours being pursued
as part of the study abroad experience
5. Cost of the study abroad experience (including transportation,
tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses with due consideration given
to the cost of living in the host country).
6. Previous study abroad experience of the student
7. Benefit to the major or minor of the student
8. Number of credit hours completed by the student
prior to the study abroad experience
Preference will be given to students participating
in an FSU or University System of Maryland sponsored program.
The Council may decide to interview any or all candidates
and it may ask for additional information.

Institutional Scholarships
Departmental scholarships are available from individual departments,
including the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in Lowndes
Hall. The Department
of Foreign Languages offers two foreign language awards to French
or Spanish majors, and one Belfoure award to French majors. Amount:
$500 - 1,000.
State Scholarships
USM
Scholarships are awarded to students who take part in study abroad
programs through FSU or other University of Maryland campuses, such
as Towson
and College Park. Refer to these program sites for specific information
and remember that other USM campuses will most likely give preference
to their own students. Amount: varies
Maryland
International Education Association (MIEA) Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to students who are residents of Maryland
and who have an overall GPA of at least 3.2. Amount: $500
Students may also apply for the Hope
Scholarship ($3,000 - 5,000 awards, deadline is March 1st) which
will apply towards programs that are sponsored by a Maryland institution,
and the Women's
Forum Scholarship ($500 awards, deadline is early May).
National Scholarships
The Gilman
International Scholarship is specifically for US citizens or Permanent
Residents who are recipients of federal financial aid (Pell Grant).
The awards are $5,000 per semester or $3,000 for the summer. Deadlines
are 15 October and 15 March.
National
Security Education Program Scholarships - NSEP seeks to lead in
development of the national capacity to educate US citizens, understand
foreign cultures, strengthen US economic competitiveness, and enhance
international cooperation and security. These scholarships are awarded
for semester, year or short-term study in countries that are of strategic
interest to the US. Deadline is 15 November to the CIE and usually mid-February
to NSEP. Amount: varies from $2,500 for summer programs up to $8,000
for full year programs.
Rotary
Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship is available to students
with at least two years of university. It is a generous scholarship,
covering all overseas expenses, but also highly competitive. Application
forms are available from the CIE office. Students must apply at least
a year in advance.
Fulbright
Scholarships Fulbright scholarships are very competitive and highly
prestigious. These scholarships are awarded to US citizens who have
completed a bachelor's degree and want to take part in research/travel
overseas. Students should apply during their final year of undergraduate
study. Applications must reach the Institute of International Education
(sponsors of the Fulbright grants) by late October, so the CIE deadline
is in September. FSU students may apply either through the CIE or from
the Fulbright advisor, Dr. John Neral (Guild Center 130, x4265). Amount:
covers all overseas expenses.
Freeman
in Asia Scholarship is one of many IIE scholarships. This scholarship
is for students on federal financial aid who wish to study in one of
15 Asian countries. Deadlines are November 1st, March 1st and April
1st. Awards vary from $3,000 for summer to $7,000 for full year.
Bridging
Japan Scholarships support undergraduate students majoring in any
field of study who want to study in Japan. Japanese language background
is not required, but is helpful. Awards are $2,500 - 4,000 depending
on length of program, and two $10,000 awards for one year of study.
Deadlines are October 3rd and April 3rd.
Rhodes Scholarship
- for study at Oxford University for up to two years. All expenses are
covered. This is a highly competitive scholarship. Recipients often
become leaders in their fields. Deadline is October 12 (so one month
earlier at FSU).
Study Abroad Program Scholarships
American
Institute for Foreign Study Scholarships (AIFS) Students who take
part in one of AIFS's programs overseas may apply to AIFS for either
a merit scholarship or a minority scholarship through the CIE. Application
forms are available from the CIE Office. FSU affiliates with this program,
so all financial aid will transfer as well.
AustraLearn
Scholarships - awarded to students who participate in an AustraLearn
program and who have at least a 2.5 overall GPA. Scholarship and travel
grant amounts vary. FSU affiliates with this program, so all financial
aid will transfer as well.
Council
(CIEE) Scholarships - awarded to students who take part in Council
study abroad programs. Some scholarships are designed specifically for
minority students. Type of scholarship, eligibility requirements and
amounts vary.
International
Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Scholarships - awarded to students
who take part in an ISEP program and who cover at least 50% of their
own costs. Students may apply for the Annette Kade Scholarship for study
in Germany or France, or for the Korean Scholarship. Amounts range from
$1,500 - 3,000. FSU affiliates with this program, so all financial aid
will transfer as well.
School
for International Training (SIT) Scholarships - awarded to students
who take part in a SIT program. These awards take the form of scholarships,
grants and funds. Amount: varies. FSU affiliates with this program,
so all financial aid will transfer as well.
Minority
Scholarships Several scholarships are available for students who
are members of minorities, such as the Robert S. Bailey Scholarship.
Deutscher Akademischer
Austauschdienst (DAAD) provides scholarships and stipends to individuals
interested in studying or conducting research in Germany.
Graduate:
Graduate students who take part in FSU study abroad
programs may apply for the CIE study abroad scholarships (see above).

Scholarships Fulbright scholarships are very competitive and highly

Marshall
Scholarships are awarded to students who want to pursue a graduate
degree in the UK. Applicants should apply during their final year of
undergraduate study. You must be under 26 years of age and have at least
a 3.7 GPA. Deadline is October 1st. All expenses are covered by this
generous scholarship.
US-Ireland
Alliance; George Mitchell Scholarships - These awards cover all
expenses for one year of graduate study in one of seven universities
in the Republic of Ireland. The deadline is October 10th.
Institute
for International Education Professional Grants - US citizens who
are in their second year of a graduate degree program qualify for this
grant that covers 3-7 months of study or research in NIS or East and
Central European countries. Deadline is March 15th.
National
Science Foundation - These NSF grants cover 8 week summer programs
in Japan, Korea or Taiwan for graduate students in science or engineering.
Deadline is December 1st.
