The School for International Training (SIT)
Spring semester, Fall semester, Academic Year, Summer

The School for International Training offers 57 study abroad programs in over 40 countries. SIT is well known for its field-based learning and its thorough integration of students into their host cultures. Many SIT programs are located in countries that US citizens rarely visit, such as Mongolia, Tibet, Indonesia, Uganda, Cuba, and Madagascar. FSU signed an affiliation agreement with SIT in 2001, allowing FSU students to enroll in SIT programs while still using FSU financial aid.

Dates: Please note that the dates for each SIT program vary, but all are listed in the SIT program catalog available in the CIE office. Most overseas universities have fall semesters which run from September to January (15 credits), or fall terms which run from September to December (12 credits only), and spring semesters which run from January or February to May, June or July, depending on the length of the spring recess. Pay special attention to dates for colleges and universities in the southern hemisphere, which usually begin their year in mid-February and finish in November. Programs in Japan will also have different start and finish dates.

Course Offerings: Each college or university offers a different listing of courses. Students will participate in a field study, an independent study and take courses that are part of a thematic seminar, focusing on one of SIT's multidisciplinary subject areas. Please check the program catalog in the CIE office, or ask to see a specific course catalog for the university you wish to attend. All courses must be approved for transfer by your Academic Advisor and the CIE Director prior to departure.

Costs: FSU students pay a program fee directly to FSU for however long they will be studying overseas, and FSU then pays SIT. All students are also required to pay a $45 application fee and a $400 deposit directly to SIT. A $150 nonrefundable administration fee must be paid to FSU. The SIT fee covers all tuition, housing, airfare, insurance and overseas excursions. Additional costs to students will include a passport, additional travel while overseas, domestic travel to the US point of departure, and an ISIC card.

Accommodation: Students will be housed in local student hostels, with families, or on the university campus itself. All students will take part in a homestay for part of their time overseas. Check the SIT catalog or website for details.
