The University of Northumbria is located in Newcastle in the northeast of England, just one hour from Edinburgh, and three hours from London. With over 20,000 students and five campuses, it is one of the largest and most progressive new universities in Britain, and has consistently been given high ratings in teaching and research. Newcastle is a lively city and home to several universities. It features both ancient sites and modern amenities, including Europe's largest shopping center, and many pubs and night clubs. Dates: The fall semester begins in mid September and finishes in mid-January. The spring semester begins at the end of January and ends in early June with a three week spring recess. Course Offerings: Northumbria offers study abroad students the full range of its course offering with few exceptions. Areas include Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Economics, Political Science, Computer Science, Education, Theater and Music/Dance and many others. Students may also tutor locally in schools, whether or not they are education majors.
Costs: Costs for one semester at Northumbria will vary depending on the exchange rate. Currently tuition for one semester is 3,325 UK pounds. Students pay all program costs to FSU and remain registered at FSU during their semester abroad. Additional costs include room and board (see below), airfare (approximately $600-700), additional travel while overseas, passport, ISIC card, and a nonrefundable administrative fee of $150. Total cost for tuition, room and board, comes to approximately $9300, depending on the current exchange rate.
Accommodation: Students are normally housed on campus in Claude Gibb Residence Hall, which consists of single rooms with communal hall bathrooms. There is a dining hall downstairs and students are required to purchase a 14/week meal plan. The full cost of room and board for one semester varies but the average cost is 1,620 UK pounds or about $3,030. Students who wish to attend Northumbria must apply by 15 March for the following fall semester and by 15 October for the following spring semester.
