Crime Prevention
The University Police have been awarded the Governor's Crime Prevention Award
annually since 1990. It is our belief that it is better to prevent and deter crimes,
instead of solving them after they occur. To that end, each officer participates in a
minimum of two crime prevention activities each semester. Selected program highlights include:
- Rape Aggression Defense, a self-defense program for women featuring hands-on
practice, as well as mental preparation, to avoid or resist this crime.
- Operation Identification, a program that deters theft by marking valuables
for easy identification and retrieval.
- Residential and Commercial Surveys, during which security improvements are
recommended for university offices and residential facilities.
- Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Programs, which present information in
formats that students are receptive to, sometimes interactively, sometimes in the
residence halls, always factually and with the seriousness that these topics deserve.
- Personal Protection Programs, such as the Night Assistant escort program and the university shuttle service.
- Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, which assists in the design and retrofitting
of campus facilities to reduce the opportunity for criminal activity to take place.
