The mission of the Physical Plant Department is to provide the physical environment, utilities, and support services necessary to conduct teaching and service activities through the professional management of the design, construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of the buildings, grounds and infrastructure of the University. Managed by Ray Blank extension 4125. Trades consists of plumbing, carpentry, lock shop, electrical, painting, grounds, garage, sanitation disposal and heating & air conditioning. The plumbing shop provides services for repairs to commodes, sinks,faucets, shower heads,drains and water fountains that are leaking, plugged or inoperable or need replacement. The carpentry shop provides services for repairs to drywall, wooden furniture(broken drawers & desk legs), signage, screens, windows,installation of bulletin boards, repair of locks and issuance of keys. It also provides general labor for moving offices(the requesting department must package loose items in boxes and computers should be disconnected and prepared), installation of toilet paper holders and paper towel dispensers, special events services and some snow removal. The electrical shop provides for services and repairs to light ballasts, electrical circuits,electrical outlets, resetting circuit panels, maintaining external lighting and lay in new wiring per preventive maintenance directives. Installation of additional electrical services, outlets, and lighting is considered new work and must be funded by the requesting department. The painting shop performs its duties on a cyclical basis and is modified based on actual need. Interior painting is limited by the availability of funds. Special painting requests are handled on a non- priority basis. Painting by other than plant personnel is prohibited except in the residence halls. Grounds maintains fields, lawns and gardens during the growing season and snow removal during the winter months. New plantings and/ or modifications to existing landscaping must be approved or coordinated through grounds group. The garage provides vehicle repair service for the University automobile fleet, refuse disposal and on a limited basis transportation service. To schedule transportation a work requisition must be submitted in advance of the need. The service is provided at cost to the department requesting the service. The heating and air-conditioning shop handles problems of existing heating and air-conditioning systems. The purchase and installation of specialized environmental control systems such as those used in laboratories are the responsibility of the using department as are any modifications or service needed on them. Any work that needs to be done by any of the trades must be submitted on a work requisition. Work requests deemed not within ordinary parameters will require the requesting department to pay associated costs related to the repair in question. The trades area is managed by John Brewer at extension 4895. Housekeeping services are provided by staff in all campus buildings. The services are provided daily. Essentially they provide cleaning services such as bathroom and shower care, floor care, spills, breakage cleanup, blood borne cleanup and window cleaning. Managed by Gary Love at extension 4044. The Planning & Construction Office, provides services for facilities renewal projects on campus. Projects may include, but not limited to, paving, sidewalk construction & repair, utility work and mechanical upgrades. The office also oversees capital improvement projects to new buildings, asbestos abatement, and athletic fields. Managed by Jeanine Bachtel at extension 4898. Work reception is accomplished by requesting non-emergency services via the online Work Request form. This includes special event support by any of the trades or custodial services. Printed copies of the work requisition form can be obtained by phoning extension 4125. Problems with elevators and pest control can be reported directly to extension 4125. For daytime emergencies you must call extension 4125. The department's administrative assistant assures that all emergency requests are relayed to the appropriate shop.
