Film premiere: ‘Roadtrip Frostburg: Los Angeles’
Posted on 04-5-2007
A screening of the film “Roadtrip Frostburg: Los Angeles” will be shown on Wednesday, May 17 at 8 p.m. in the Lane University Center room 201.
The one-hour movie tells the tale of four FSU students who were selected to travel to Los Angeles, Calif., this past January to meet and interview FSU alumni who are pursuing their passions in the entertainment industry. Alumni featured in the film include Matt Bozin (film production assistant), Greg Garcia (TV producer, “My Name is Earl”), Andrew Hossom (marketing vice president for Fox Sports), Jennifer Keister (stage and screen actress), JW Myers (filmmaker and actor) and Phil Rosenthal (advertising exec and musician). The students filmed and edited the material and captured not only the alumni stories, but their own personal growth on their inspiring journey.
The idea for this documentary came from Roadtrip Nation — a group of Pepperdine University graduates who, upon graduation, did not know their directions in life. The three young men set out on a cross-country roadtrip in a green R.V. and interviewed people to hear their individual journeys. Since that original Roadtrip five years ago, the organization has been helping other student filmmakers perform similar excursions.
The screening of the FSU film is free and open to the public.

Passing on the torch,
the value of mentoring
Posted by Robin Wynder on 05-14-2005
Emmanuel Cephas, Jr. knows first-hand the value of mentoring. Graduating from Frostburg State University May 2005 with a major in Computer Science, minor in Mathematics and a resumé that includes being a McNair Scholar and being selected the 2004 National Black Student Engineer of the Year, he has been on both sides of the relationship.
Throughout high school, he was involved in the College Bound Foundation where he was encouraged to pursue and was prepared for higher education.
Upon entering F.S.U., Emmanuel enrolled in the Diversity Center M.A.P. Mentoring Program where a F.S.U. staff member mentored him.
As a sophomore, Emmanuel encouraged a friend to transfer to Frostburg and became a mentor to him. That student, Stephann Balthazar, developed excellent academic skills under the mentorship of Emmanuel and transferred to University of Maryland to complete his degree in Engineering.
Now, as he prepares to leave Frostburg and continue his studies (to pursue a Ph.D. in Physics), Emmanuel continues to pass the torch as he mentors and encourages freshmen engineering major, Atieno Owens.
Atieno reports that she was feeling discouraged and on the verge of giving up her dreams of becoming an engineer. With all the advancements that have been made, it’s still a difficult and often lonely journey for an African American female to pursue such a field of study, especially at a P.W.I.
The mentoring relationship with Emmanuel has renewed her sense of determination to pursue this dream and gives her the encouragement and strength that she needs when she feels discouraged or loses focus.
Although he will no longer be on this campus, Atieno looks forward to a continued mentoring relationship with Emmanuel and hopes one day at be the one to pass on the torch.
She is well on her way as she earned “Dean’s List” Honors her first semester and is developing her leadership skills by serving on the executive board of the Black Student Alliance for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Atieno and Emmanuel both encourage other students to become involved in mentoring relationships with faculty, staff and peers.
