The Center for Literary Arts has any number of literary opportunities (see nagivation bar at left) for residents of and visitors to Western Maryland; however, through the sponsorship of the Allegany Arts Council, we will be creating large-scale literary window installations along two walking paths in the Arts and Entertainment and Historic Districts of Frostburg.
This project is called Walk, Read, and Write.
How can you be involved?
Residents of Allegany County may submit work (up to 3 poems or up to 500 words of prose) by 22 February 2017 to firstname.lastname@example.org. A committee will review submissions and will select work by at least four writers to become liteary installations.
When the installations appear in April, join us for opening and closing receptions featuring guided walks, or just drop by to look at the works and respond to them. The writers whose work is on display will "curate" responses, possibly adding them to the installations.
Keep an eye out for more information, which will appear soon.
Our Mission Statement:
Located in downtown Frostburg and sponsored by FSU, The Frostburg Center for Literary Arts serves Western Maryland and the surrounding areas by celebrating the literary arts through a variety of public events and productions, by educating and broadening an interested audience for literature, and by fostering new writers and their work.
Winter 2017 Hours
Other hours may be arranged by appointment.
The Community Writers' Group will take a January hiatus,
but will reconvene on 2/13/2017.
Do you need a comfortable, vibrant space to read or write? Then come visit the Center at 22 East Main Steet in downtown Frostburg. We have coffee, wi-fi access, writing reference books, and contemporary literary journals to browse. We also have free copies of our local publications: Bittersweet, Backbone Mountain Review, and Nightsun. Leave a written poem on our easel pad for display in the window, or add a line via typewriter to our Exquisite Corpse project. While you're at it, check out our local author book display or our animated poetry videos!
For information on the Center's activities, download our newsletter, The Writer's Notepad (downloadable PDF file). Activities include bringing writers to the Frostburg community for public readings, workshops, and discussions; the publication and distribution of Backbone Mountain Review in partnership with the Allegany Arts Council; production of Oasis, a short weekly radio program on WFWM; a reading space with contemporary literary journals and access to a selection of the Lannan videos featuring writers such as Li-Young Lee, Adrienne Rich, Louise Gluck, and Octavio Paz; and literary opportunities for students and community members.
The Center is a crucial element to the downtown Frostburg arts and entertainment district, sponsoring regularly scheduled events such as writers' and readers' groups, the annual Nightsun conference, and readings by fiction writers and poets while forging partnerships with local businesses, including Dante's, Mountain City Coffee and Creamery, Mountain City Traditonal Arts and Main Street Books. We are a proud participant of the annual block parties and art walks and we invite readers and writers to stop in and visit us.
