Broadsides and More Project Juried Art Show and Call for Ekphrastic Poetry Submissions
The Frostburg Center for Literary Arts is running its second annual Broadsides and More Project featuring a juried art exhibition, an Art and Writing workshop, and an ekphrastic poetry chapbook collection. Regional artists are invited to submit visual art including, but not limited to, sculpture, painting, or drawing which incorporates some or all of a text of a poem.
Broadsides are artistic prints of individual poems. We see these done by letter presses for artistic representations of the poem, and we see them printed by municipalities for programs that make poetry accessible, as in the poetry underground series on the New York City subways. The ekphrastic poetry chapbook is looking for poems that are based on artwork. The Center invites visual artists and poets to submit their work. Submitted works will be juried by artist and writer Steve Sherrill, Associate Professor of English and Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona. Students may submit art and poems for free and community members may submit works for a fee of $10.00. There is no charge for poetry submissions. The due date for submissions is April 5th. Please either mail submissions to Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532, email the Center at firstname.lastname@example.org, or drop off your work at the Center at 22 E. Main St. Frostburg, MD.
Monetary awards will be given for Best in Show, the Student Prize, the 2D Prize, and the 3D Prize. A reading and reception will be held on April 19, 2014 at the Center for Literary Arts from 5-7PM.
The Art and Writing workshop will take place at the Center for Literary Arts at 22 E. Main St. Frostburg, MD on March 29th from 12:00-4:00. Steven Sherrill and his wife, Lee Peterson, will be leading the workshop. The workshop will discuss the relationship between visual art and writing and will guide and instruct participants on how to create art from writing and vice versa. Please bring your own materials for this workshop.
