This year's Pirates Ahoy! was held on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 and was a complete success!
Now in its eighth year, this program is the result of a collaborative effort between The Children’s Literature Centre, The Main Street Program of Frostburg, the City of Frostburg, and the Frostburg State University Summer School. At this event, our featured author, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, made this day even more magical by presenting to the children and also signing their books afterwards. After completing their “pirate registration” at City Place and the Palace Theatre, our visitors flocked to have their picture taken and participate in the costume contest. During the afternoon, they enjoyed pirate activities including face painting, craft workshops and sidewalk art, and also joined in pirate storytelling at the secret Pirate’s den in the Palace Theatre, where they were enchanted by pirate storybook readings, pirate songs and games by faculty, graduate assistants, and alumni of the Children’s Literature Centre. Each child received a goodie bag filled with souvenirs from the day. Frostburg stores and businesses distributed gold coins to the participating pirates as they navigated their way through the business district. A record number attended Pirates Ahoy! 2013, with around 450 children and their families enjoying the activities.
