African American Studies
The African American Studies Minor is an important
component of FSU’s goal to provide students with a liberal education which
will equip them to navigate their way in an increasingly multicultural
and globally integrated world. The program seeks to fill the void created
by the all too frequent omission or inadequate treatment of the African
and African American perspective in traditional disciplines. This program
provides a special opportunity for study and research focusing on the
rich and complex African/American heritage. It addresses the collective
experience of Africans of the Diaspora who endured the vicissitudes of
slavery and colonialism but rose to impressive heights in the arts and
sciences and continue the vigorous struggle for cultural preservation
and economic survival. As an interdisciplinary program, African American
Studies as FSU draws from content and data accumulated in the Humanities,
including the Creative/Performing Arts, and the Sciences. Institutions
which directly affect the African American community are also examined.
