The
RMSC is a federally funded Department of Education
program that is seeking applicants to supervise
and tutor high school students interested in pursuing
careers in Math and/or Science. We conduct environmental
science research, including a study to investigate
the potential impacts of acid deposition on aquatic
life and water quality. During the six-week residential
component of the program, students participate in
science, math, and technical writing classes as
well as conduct hands-on field testing. Students
analyze their data using Microsoft Excel and write
reports in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. At the
end of the summer they present their study to a
panel of local officials, scientists and mathematicians.
When the students are not engaged in academic
activities, they participate in a variety of recreational
and cultural activities, camping, hiking, canoeing,
baseball games, museums, movies, plays, etc. Tutor/Counselors
are an integral part of this unique experience.
They serve as role models for the students throughout
the summer as they supervise them in the residence
halls, assist them in their academics, conduct workshops
and tutoring sessions for them and join them in
the recreational and cultural activities.
