Reading Skills and Comprehension
The aim of Critical Reading class is to help students improve their reading
speed and comprehension and develop critical thinking skills. In
both workshops and individual settings, students read pieces of various
lengths and complexity, determine author's purpose and central idea, identify
critical details, facts, and statements, practice making inferences and
drawing conclusions, learn the difference between denotation and connotation,
recognize inappropriate diction and jargon, identify fallacies and assumptions,
evaluate evidence, identify tone as determined by type of language, identify
faulty logic, and distinguish effective, logical writing from poor writing.
Students also read three novels, auto/biographies, or short stories
and write literary letters to their peers about the reading. Other
writing projects may be required as well.
ENGL 105: Critical Reading
The reading process: development of literal comprehension and critical
analysis in various content areas. This is a three (3) credit class. These
credits can be applied towards your 120 credit hour minimum required for
graduation.
