Content Peer Tutoring
The Center provides peer tutoring in groups and on an individual basis to students experiencing difficulty in 100 and 200-level courses. Peer tutoring is effective when students are enrolled in appropriate level courses, but are experiencing problems learning specific information. Groups meet periodically throughout the week on a walk-in basis.
Writing Tutoring
Students who need tutoring in writing for any course receive assistance from peer tutors on an appointment basis. Peers tutors help students generate, organize, and develop ideas for assigned papers. Tutors also explain punctuation and grammar errors, as well as teach students how to proofread, document secondary sources, and address a host of other writing-related issues. However, writing tutors do not edit or proofread students’ papers. The goal is to provide quality assistance, tools, and resources to help students become confident, independent writers.
Professional Tutoring
Tutoring provided by the professional staff assists students whose problems are more general than those addressed by peer tutoring. Some students need to improve their overall approach to learning and studying. Others need to develop specific studying and learning skills, such as textbook reading, note taking, time management, or test preparation in order to cope with the expectations of courses.
Workshops
Workshops that cover time management, test anxiety, and study skills are offered on a periodic basis. Past topics have included study strategies, tackling the textbook, test preparation and test-taking strategies, and self-management. All workshops offered by the Programs for Academic Support and Studies (P.A.S.S.) staff are free.
