Between September and May, Upward Bound participants attend enrichment classes on 12 Saturdays on the campus of Frostburg State University. Students receive enrichment classes in areas of writing, literature, math, science and foreign language. Selected students also may attend an Internet-based class in the computer lab, or work on special projects such as digital video production. Video students are currently editing footage about the UB summer experience. Students also have the opportunity to participate in various field trips during the academic year. For example, students have attended Cats and A Christmas Carol in Washington, D.C., gone snow-tubing at the Wisp at Deep Creek Lake, and competed with each other on a scavenger hunt at a local corn maze by flashlight. UBers who have made the honor roll have had the opportunity to scale the climbing wall on FSU's campus. Students have also participated in several environmental stream restoration projects both on and off campus. One such project involved the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and took place at Rocky Gap State Park. The streams around campus have been tested many times by UB students. The Director and Assistant Director visit each student at school the week prior to an Upward Bound Saturday to monitor student progress, to provide information on various educational opportunities, and to inform students about forthcoming cultural events in the area or on campus. The Directors also meet with each high school coordinator when they visit the students. Upward Bound further provides academic advising, career exploration, college campus visits, tutoring, and cultural opportunities.
