The Writing Center offers free writing assistance to students-from
freshmen to graduates-in hundreds of sessions every semester.
When you visit the Writing Center, you will work with the director or peer tutors. They can:
- help you get started
- help you develop a thesis and supporting paragraphs
- help you address an audience and clarify purpose, focus, and tone
- show you organizational tactics
- show you creative alternatives to make your writing stronger
- show you how to cite sources correctly for every discipline (including on-line sources)
- teach you effective proofreading techniques
- explain punctuation and grammar errors such as comma splices, run-ons, fragments, subject/verb agreement, etc.
- help you interpret an instructor's directions
- help make improvements on an already graded paper
Helpful information:
- you should bring your assignment if you have a tutoring appointment
- we encourage you to meet with the same tutor regularly (you can choose)
- you do not need to see a tutor to obtain copies of our 60 helpful writing hints handouts
- you can e-mail specific questions about your paper or about punctuation and
grammar to: pwiley@frostburg.edu
The Writing Center is NOT:
- a quick-fix shop where you can drop off your paper and pick it up later, "fixed."
- a "dummy lab" for students who just can't cut it. A majority of the
students who visit the Writing Center are in good academic standing, and many
are on the Dean's List.
