MINUTES

  • The meeting was called to order and the minutes from the October 19, 2005 meeting were accepted.
  • Old Business: The prior schedule of meetings was amended due to the holiday break in December. The next meeting was rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 12 at 10AM.
  • Proposals for consideration:
    • Department of Biology - Dr. Scott Fritz for Dr. Hongqi Li
      • Change of Number/Title/Credits and Change of Catalog:
        1. BIOL 311 Morphology of Thallophytes
        2. BIOL 312 Morphology of Embryophytes

        It was moved and seconded to amend the proposal with minor editing suggestions. Motion carried. Scott Fritz abstained.

    • Department of Psychology - Dr. Kevin Peterson for Dr. Ann Bristow
      • Change of Catalog Description/Prerequisite:
        1. PSYC 600 Introduction to Counseling and Assessment

        It was moved and seconded to accept the proposal without contingency. Motion carried.

    • African American Studies -no representative available
      • New Course:
        1. AAST 490 Topics in African American Studies
      • Change in Existing Program Requirements:
        1. African American Studies Minor

        It was moved and seconded to revise and resubmit the proposal with a proposed FSU syllabus including required elements and FSU form. Concern was expressed in how the attendance policy was described in the syllabus presented, and the committee recommends the attendance policy be stated more clearly in relation to the grading policy. Motion carried.

    • Department of Computer Science - Dr. Mohsen Chitsaz
      • New Course:
        1. COSC 620 Security in Computing
        2. COSC 631 Web Development and Programming II
      • Change in Catalog Description/Prerequisites:
        1. COSC 630 Web Development and Programming I
        2. COSC 635 Network and Data Communication I
        3. COSC 636 Network and Data Communication II
        4. COSC 700 Master Research Paper or Project
      • Change of Number/Title/Credits:
        1. COSC 630 Web Programming and Development I
      • Change in Existing Program Requirements:
        1. Master of Science in Applied Computer Science


        It was moved and seconded to accept the proposal with the following contingencies. Each course description is to include frequency (Variable) and prerequisites. Minor editing changes were pointed out. Motion carried.


    • Department of Sociology - Dr. Terry Russell for Dr. Kara Rogers Thomas
      • New Course:
        1. SOCI 350 Folklore in Appalachia


        It was moved and seconded to accept the proposal contingent upon rewriting of the course description and determination of appropriate prerequisites. Motion carried.


    • Department of Chemistry - Dr. Peggy Biser and Dr. Robert Larivee
      • New Course:
        1. CHEM 425 Pharmacological Ethnobotany

        It was moved and seconded to accept the proposal without contingency. Motion carried.

    • Department of Biology - Dr. Linda Lyon - 6:15PM
      • New Course:
        1. BIOL 128 Introduction to Ethnobotany
        2. BIOL 328 Economic Botany
        3. BIOL 428 Ethnographic Field Techniques
        4. BIOL 484 Ethnobotany and Ecology of Madagascar

        It was moved and seconded to accept the new courses with the following contingencies: 1) the frequency listing is to be added to all course descriptions, 2) BIOL 428 needs to be edited to read 3 hours lecture, 3) the course number and title section of Request for New Course Approval form needs to be filled in, and 4) removal of specific reference to Madagascar from the BIOL 484 course description to allow flexibility of location. Motion carried. Scott Fritz abstained.

      • New Major, Degree Program, or Degree:
        1. Bachelor of Science in Ethnobotany


        This part of the proposal was pulled by the Biology Department and will be submitted at the next meeting.
