The ubiquity of mobile, touch screen devices in today’s society inspired collaboration between the departments of chemistry and computer science at a liberal arts university. Students use their mobile, touch screen devices (such as smart phones and tablets) in all aspects of their lives, including their classes. There are a variety of proprietary “apps” which have been developed as learning tools for students. Most of these “apps” are designed to work on a specific platform (e.g., Android, IOS). This project involved the development and evaluation of a web-based, platform-independent, educational touchscreen game. The primary goal of this project was to create a flexible, kinesthetic, open-source learning game “app” that is platform independent, web-based, and highly usable through the development of an interface that allows for the generic application of this “app” to any subject matter.
