Scope of Advising

Advisee Responsibilities

Advisees (Students) should:

  • Make an appointment with his/her academic advisor prior to the registration appointment date in PAWS;
  • Prepare for the advising appointment by reviewing the requirements for graduation in the appropriate catalog;
  • Be familiar with courses, course descriptions, and prerequisites for major/minor programs and the general education program;
  • Bring a proposed educational plan to the advising appointment, preferably an academic plan through graduation (sometimes called a 4-year plan);
  • Be prepared to discuss life goals;
  • Follow through with the academic plan and any referrals to utilize support services discussed at the appointment;
  • Exhibit a professional and respectful attitude towards advisors.

  1. EXPLORE YOUR LIFE GOALS
    • Determine career aspirations, e.g. where do you want to be 5 years from now? 10 years?
    • Answer "What are you good at? What do you enjoy?"

  2. EXPLORE YOUR VOCATIONAL GOALS
    • Develop knowledge of vocational fields
    • Understand the changing nature of work in society
    • Accept all fields of work as worthy and dignified
    • Seek information when other options are available

  3. CHOOSE YOUR PROGRAM
    • Understand what programs are available in the college
    • Understand the requirements of programs (special entrance requirements, fees, time commitments)
    • Know the University requirements for transfer programs

  4. CHOOSE YOUR COURSES
    • Explore course choices and course content
    • Discover any special information regarding courses (prerequisites, transferability, does the course meet graduation requirements?)
    • Understand the rules and regulations of the University, e.g., probation and dismissal, limit on course loads
    • Discover opportunities for honors courses or remedial courses

  5. SCHEDULE COURSES
    • Use the PAWS system for scheduling and changing schedules
    • Prepare schedules compatible with work and commuting requirements
    • Honor all prerequisites
