FTPing from off-campus to the
mirror web server (mirror.frostburg.edu) or, the
faculty web server (faculty.frostburg.edu)

Effective Date of Change 11-2009

Due to a requirement from the Maryland General Assembly auditors, we can no longer open FTP access directly from off campus to the FSU network.  However, we have successfully enabled FTP from off campus through our VPN and tested access to mirror.frostburg.edu and faculty.frostburg.edu.  This meets the auditors’ requirements because the VPN connections are both secure and encrypted.

In order to FTP from off campus, you will first need to log in to the FSU VPN.  Instructions on connecting to the VPN, they are located here:  http://www.frostburg.edu/computing/help/Employee%20VPN%20Access.pdf

Once you have successfully logged into the VPN, you may then initiate FTP connections to mirror or faculty from off campus.  The only requirement is that your FTP client must be configured for Passive FTP mode.  In Dreamweaver, this can be configured using the following instructions:  http://support.tigertech.net/dreamweaver-passive

If you use a different FTP client and you aren’t sure how to configure it, you could try using the Core FTP client instead.  It is a free download, and it uses passive FTP by default.  It can be downloaded here:  http://www.coreftp.com/download/coreftplite.exe
