Second Life Workshops
FSU is now offering two workshops to faculty members and staff who would like to explore using the 3D Virtual Reality environment known as Second Life. Second Life is a free virtual tool that can be used to supplement instruction or hold meetings real time in a virtual environment.
Second Life Basic Skills Workshop (New to Second Life) is the first course where you will learn how to become a member of Second Life, down-load the software tool, create your avatar, navigate, and communicate in the virtual world. You must complete this course prior to taking the Intermediate section. You have the option of enrolling in either the self-paced course or the instructor led course.
Second Life Intermediate Skills Workshop is the second course where you will learn how to create instructional materials and manage your class or group in world. To enroll in this course you will need to complete the Basic Skills Workshop or obtain permission from the course facilitator.
Rik Bair, Instructional Designer in the ACIT department, facilitates this course.
Scheduled session(s): Registration typically closes up to 1 week prior to the session start date.
About the program:
This program is entirely online; however, the option for synchronous meetings can be discussed. Notify the course instructor and a lab and time will be reserved.
The Second Life workshops will take place in both Blackboard and Second Life. We will use Blackboard to provide you with resources and to communicate with you. In Second Life, you will be immersed in the virtual environment where you gain first-hand experience as an avatar that you create to represent yourself "in world".
Equipment needed: A headset with a built-in microphone. If you do not have a head set, you can borrow one from the ACIT helpdesk: X7777
The courses will be offered in a revolving schedule back-to-back. If you cannot make the second part of a workshop, you will always be welcome to participate when it is offered again.
Register for one of the following sessions:
Basic Skills Workshop (May 6-17)
Intermediate Skills Workshop (April 15 - April 26)
(Registration will reactivate once a new available session has been announced)
About the Workshop Instructor:
Rik is the Instructional Designer in the Office of Academic Computing & Instructional Technologies as well as an adjunct faculty member of FSU's College of Education.
