Design Options

All official FSU web sites are required to use one of the following design options for their web sites.

  • Site Design Option 1

Design Option 1This option 1 includes a 60 pixel deep Unit/Program Identifier area (bordered by a 2 pixel gray rule at the bottom). It is appropriate for sites that want a simple design with little or no graphic effect in the identifier area. This option may be used for the site home page and secondary pages. A customizable version of this design option is also provided as the base for sites that want to create a custom home page design.

Site Design Option 1 provides three column-width combinations for the main and secondary content areas.

    400 px
    150 px
    450 px
    100 px

The 350 pixel/200 pixel combination provides the most design possibilities for creative designers with the largest optional secondary content area.

The 400 pixel/150 pixel combination provides medium-sized main & secondary content columns for creative use. This is the best option for most sites.

The 450 pixel/100 pixel combination provides the widest area for main body text and is a good choice if you will not use optional secondary content column.

Totally-text and graphics-enhanced versions of HTML template files are provided for each main/secondary content area column-width combination in this site design option. See the Download Templates page for details.

  • Site Design Option 2

Design Option 2This option includes a 130 pixel deep Unit/Program Identifier area (bordered by a 2 pixel gray rule at the bottom). It is appropriate for sites that want a more prominent design or that want to make greater use of images in the headline area.

This option may be used for the site home page and secondary pages.

Site Design Option 2 provides three column-width combinations for the main and secondary content areas.

Customizable Version of Site Design Option 1
- for creating Custom Designed Home Pages

Official FSU web sites may create a unique home page design from a customizable version of Site Design Option 1.

Considerations:

  1. Creating a custom home page design requires planning, creativity and intermediate/advanced level web and graphic skills.
  2. Be sure to coordinate any custom home page design projects with the the FSU Webmaster (as required) to prevent problems.
  3. All custom designed home page must be reviewed and approved by the Web Advisory Group before implementation.

The customizable version of option 1 includes the standard template areas, including

  • a 60 pixel deep Unit/Program Identifier area bordered by a 2 pixel gray rule at the bottom. In a custom designed home page the 2 pixel gray rule is optional.
  • the standard 180 pixel wide main navigation area
  • main & secondary content areas
  • and the footer area.

In addition, the customizable version of site design option 1 includes an optional secondary navigation area.

Example of Custom Design based on Customizable Design Option 1Experienced designers can create powerful custom designs by creatively using color, images and other design elements in the template areas. See the Template Areas & Custom Designed Home Pages section of the Template Areas page for details.

An HTML template file (with a custom design placeholder) and a design guide in the form of an Adobe Photoshop image file are provided for units that will build a custom designed home page. See the Download Templates page for details.
