First Annual One-Act Play Competition

Frostburg State University's Center for Creative Writing is pleased to announce Mary Lynn Dobson's play Skin Deep as the winner for the 2010 One-Act Playwriting Competition. Dobson is a playwright from Atlantic Highlands, NJ. Over 45 one-act plays from around the country were submitted, as well as several from Canada and England. The plays were judged on plot, character development, dialogue and overall quality.

Dobson's play is a one-act comedy that focuses on the world of child beauty pageants and explores how the edges are blurred as to what can be classified as "pageant fun" and what is exploitation. Skin Deep was the only play submitted to receive a perfect score from the judges. One judge comments, "So true! This play truly exposes the truth about little girls' beauty pageants." Dobson will be receiving a $750 cash prize and a full-stage production of her play.

Minnesota resident Michelle Jane Wilson's That's Him, a play about the complexities a family encounters while they are mourning the loss of the father, won second place. The third place winner is Monifa's Kiss by Alonzo D. LaMont, Jr., a resident of Baltimore, MD. Wilson and LaMont will be receiving staged readings of their works and $250 and $100, respectively.

The full-stage production of Skin Deep will be produced by Cumberland's Front & Center Stage on September 24th and 25th at 8 p.m. at the Palace Theatre in Frostburg. The staged readings of That's Him and Monifa's Kiss will be on September 25th at 2 p.m. at the Lyric Theater in Frostburg. Tickets are $10 for each of the Skin Deep performances and $10 for the staged readings, with a combined ticket option for both shows costing $15. Student tickets for all of the performances are $5 with a valid student ID. Tickets will be available at Main Street Books in Frostburg and the Book Center in Cumberland beginning August 1, 2010. Tickets will also be available at the box office on the day of the shows. A question-and-answer forum with the directors and playwrights will follow the staged readings on Saturday; the playwright, cast and director will also have a question-and-answer session after each performance of Skin Deep.
