Book Groups and Writing Groups

The goal of this programming is to reach out to students and community members by offering several book groups and writing workshops for those as passionate about reading and writing as we are. Gerry LaFemina, director of the Center, has made community outreach a priority over the past few years, and with the Center's move to Main Street, we have made this priority a reality. The goal of the book groups is not to take away from existing book groups in the community, but rather, the goal is to offer complimentary programming and support. All book groups and workshops are facilitated by FSU faculty and staff as well as dedicated students and community members. Check out the side bar for offered programs, and click on the links for further information. We hope you enjoy all that we offer.

Writers Groups

Adult Writer's Workshop

Open to nonstudent writers with any level of workshop experience, the goal of the writer's workshop is to provide an opportunity for members of the local creative writing community to share and receive feedback on their works of poetry, fiction or creative nonfiction. Meetings occur every second and third Monday of the month, at 7 pm, at the Center for Creative Writing, 22 East Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532.

The group is designed to be beneficial to both the beginning and experienced writer and workshop participant. Communication between group members is encouraged outside workshop meetings through the e-mail list. Meetings occur every first and third Monday of the month, at 7 pm. Additionally, the writers group features a private message board for members to post their work; discuss various aspects of writing; and the submission and publication process. To sign up for the workshop's mailing list, communicate with other members, as well as receive meeting reminders, please send an email to kabrown0@frostburg.edu.

Teen Writer's Group (Dates to TBD)

The Center hosts a writer’s group for local teen writers and readers to meet informally to discuss writing and books. Writers are invited to share their work with the group for feedback. Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m.

Student Workshops

Look for more writing workshops offered for elementary, middle and high school students at participating libraries of the Allegany County Library System in the fall that are designed to help student writers of all levels to practice expressing themselves creatively and provide them with the necessary tools they need to mature as writers.

For more information about these workshops, contact the Frostburg Center for Creative Writing at 301.687.4340.
