Confidence In A Box

The heel-click of a shoe
just does somethin' for a girl.
It gives her confidence
like the kind
that accompanies the word
Damn!
And when you're walkin'
down the hall
you gotta shake your ass
a little bit better
cause you know everyone's lookin'.
That sound teases mischief,
especially at night
when you're walkin' alone,
thinkin' about all the things
you've done wrong.
With the next step
you're a rebel,
only to find
there's no trouble in this town.
And you start to add
that extra bounce
to your step to make sure
it clicks just right.
It's the craving
that keeps your favorite shoes
well worn, the addiction
that keeps your closet full.
And men wonder why
women love shoes.

Venice

This city
doesn't quite meet
my expectations
of romance,
of contentment, but instead
teases the self-destruction
that lies dormant
for the time being.

My footsteps echo
on cobble-stoned walkways,
aimlessly leading me,
feeding my need
to get lost. Fear
of nothing familiar
makes me tremble
with excitement.

They say
that in Venice
you can get
lost for days.

Narrow pockets split
callous buildings,
I wonder which holds
more mystery,
more trouble. It takes
all my will
to keep from
being swallowed.

Gerry LaFemina says: Megan Mills is a fine poet for a biology student! Working on the five year plan (or maybe more), we're happy because she'll be around for awhile yet. She's a fine poet, and we keep hoping she'll switch majors.
