Welcome

The Communication Studies major is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and theories in order to effectively deliver and interpret messages.

4 Communication Studies students

As a communication studies student, you will select courses from our three tracks: Conflict Communication Studies, where students learn to understand and manage differences and conflicts by identifying standpoints and dispelling misinformation to adapt messages ethically, Leadership Communication Studies, where students learn to deliver professional presentations, lead employees, successfully interact to build vision, motivate and link stakeholders, and manage sustainability and change through effective decision-making and problem-solving, and Public Communication and Rhetorical Studies, where students develop the ability to use effective means of persuasion, analyze message strategies, and adapt messages to public audiences to create effective messages in the 21st century. In addition, students will engage in a Capstone, which allows students to practice theories in organizational settings.

Communication StudiesThe degree affords students the chance to apply their degree broadly, as the majority of all organizations value communication skills amongst their employees. Upon graduating with this degree you will be successful interacting with clients, representing organizations, and applying communication theories to assist in your professional development or preparation for graduate school.

Our Department Offers:

  • interpersonal, presentational and listening skills most sought by employers.
  • close interaction with experienced, caring faculty.
  • the Ann L. Williams Communication Studies Scholarship for a hard-working student who best represents the department.
  • participation in the Student Communication Studies Association, a student run and faculty advised group with the mission of encouraging CMST majors to apply their leadership and networking skills across campus. The group sponsors events, volunteers locally, and serves as a community of support within the major.
  • membership in Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Communication Association.
