Department Vision
The Department of Communication Studies will provide distinctive, challenging, thorough and relevant preparation for professional, personal and academic pursuits by interested students. Communication Studies graduates will become ethical leaders in their communities and in the public and private employment sectors. The department will be recognized as the appropriate forum for achieving the goals of the Middle States Commission, MHEC, the Undergraduate Education Initiative, and our university mission with regard to the centrality of developing oral communication skills of all students.

Department Mission
The academic study of communication explores the many ways and situations in which human beings relate to each other through the use of the spoken word and other symbolic forms. Our primary emphasis as a curricular program is with the practice and analysis of face-to-face, real time dynamic interaction among people.

The Communication Studies department seeks to provide a learning environment characterized by close personal interaction with experienced, caring faculty, flexible tailoring of a program that meets the students' individual and career goals, and preparation for both career entry and advancement. Upon completion of the program, each student shall be able to contribute as an effective communicator in a variety of formal and informal settings, as an analyst and critic of communication, as a member of the communication studies discipline, and as a responsible communicator in an increasingly diverse society.

The Communication Studies department shall also continue to fulfill an integral role in the development of oral communication competencies of all Frostburg State University students.
