The Communication Studies major is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and theories in order to effectively deliver and interpret messages.

4 Communication Studies students

As a Communication Studies student, you will experience courses such as Interpersonal Communication, which explores the interactions between individuals in relationships, to Small Group Communication, which teaches students how to work effectively as part of a team, to Presentational Communication, where students harness their ability to deliver oral presentations in professional contexts, to Argumentation and Advocacy, which teaches students how to be critical thinkers when developing and analyzing arguments from a logical perspective, to Capstone, which allows students to practice theories in organizational settings, just to name a few.

Communication StudiesThe degree affords students the chance to apply their degree broadly, as the majority of all organizations value communication skills amongst their employees. Upon graduating with this degree you will be successful interacting with clients, representing organizations, and applying communication theories to assist in your professional development or preparation for graduate school.



Our Department Offers:

  • interpersonal, presentational and listening skills most sought by employers.
  • close interaction with experienced, caring faculty.
  • the Ann L. Williams Communication Studies Scholarship for a hard-working student who best represents the department.
  • participation in the Student Communication Studies Association, a student run and faculty advised group with the mission of encouraging CMST majors to apply their leadership and networking skills across campus. The group sponsors events, volunteers locally, and serves as a community of support within the major.
  • membership in Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Communication Association.
