The mission of the advising center is to assist students by collaborating with them in identifying and pursuing their educational goals, providing accurate and timely information, and promoting student responsibility and accountability for their academic success. The staff in the center will help students achieve their educational goals. They provide accurate information about degree requirements, educational options, and College of Education policies. They also check students’ progress toward graduation and verify completion of degree requirements.
The Advising Center aids in the advisement of two major groups of students, native freshmen and transfer education majors for either the Elementary Education Program or the Early Childhood/Elementary Education Program. Two faculty members work with the students in the advising center. One of the faculty members guides freshmen as they declare their major and begin selecting appropriate courses for the general education program (GEP) and their education major. At the end of the freshmen school year students are assigned an education department advisor based on the specialization chose by the student.
The other advisor coordinates the transfer days each semester at both the Frostburg campus and USMH campus. The advising of transfer students includes a complete review of all transferring institution’s classes and the Transfer Credit Evaluation from the Admissions Office. Transfer students are assisted with their applications to different phases of the programs and program requirements.
