PDS Faculty Experiences

Teachers and administrators in the partnership schools have provided a great deal of feedback concerning the working process and atmosphere created by having a cohort of five to ten interning teachers in their school over the entire school year. According to the teacher feedback, having another set of eyes and hands in a classroom is a strong asset that promotes a calmer classroom and greater learning. The one-on-one work teacher candidates are able to accomplish with students results in increased learning that for many students would not occur without the individual attention.

Not only is the teacher candidate learning from the mentor teacher but also the mentor teachers talk about the new and creative ideas the candidates bring to the school and the ways in which the candidates' excitement and enthusiasm are contagious and renewing. One particular aspect of having a candidate, according to the teachers, is their own learning from the candidates of new ways to teach a particular lesson while simultaneously being able to guide the novice excitement into the practical applications of the classroom. The PDS teachers say that one of the most rewarding parts of working with candidates is being able to take a leadership role in educating a group of people who will become teachers.
