Program Overview
Through extensive study of literature, language, and writing, English
majors develop the essential skills of critical thinking, cogent analysis,
and effective communication. These abilities are highly valued in the
world of work and enable English alumni to excel in a wide range of
professions, including teaching, law, publishing, editing, management,
public relations, technical writing, media writing, and governmental
affairs. The Department offers bachelor's degrees in four areas: literature,
creative writing, professional writing, and teaching certification.
Minors are also offered in English and in Writing.
English Major
The English major comprises 40 hours of course work. To fulfill
the requirements, you (1) take the departmental core of courses and
(2) complete one of the concentrations in literature, creative writing,
professional writing, or teaching certification.
Literature (24 hrs.)
The literature concentration prepares students to read, write, and
think critically. These are skills that are essential to your survival
and success in the Information Age regardless of what your future
holds, whether it is attending graduate school or pursuing a career
in law, publishing, editing, media writing, among others.
Creative Writing (24 hrs.)
The creative writing concentration prepares students for careers as
fiction writers, poets, and essayists, including enrollment in graduate
writing programs. With this background, you might also pursue careers
as literary agents, editors, publishers, copywriters, writers-in-schools,
book reviewers, and manuscript consultants.
Professional Writing (24 hrs.)
Students in the professional writing concentration will have a rare
opportunity--that is, to experience a curriculum that focuses on the
kinds of pragmatic writing and editing that are regularly required
in the world of work. This concentration will prepare you for a host
of professions, including technical writing and editing, media writing
and reporting, public relations, publishing, copy editing, and organization
communications.
Teaching Certification (24 hrs.)
The Teaching Certification option serves those students whose ambition
is to teach English the middle school and secondary school levels.
