Professional Writing Certificate
The Professional Writing certificate helps students acquire additional workplace and technical writing skills beyond what they take in their majors. The certificate is open to degree-seeking students in any major and requires only an additional 12 hours in English. Non-degree-seeking community members may also take the certificate, but first must show successful completion of no fewer than 42 college credits, including a first-year English course passed with a C or better. A Professional Writing certificate allows you to tell prospective employers that you have completed extra coursework that may help you better communicate in your chosen field.
Summary of Requirements
Take 12 hours from the following courses
ENGL 330 Business Writing
ENGL 336 Journalistic Writing
ENGL 338 Technical Writing
ENGL 339 Scientific Writing
ENGL 402 Editing and Production
ENGL 430 The Composing Processes
ENGL 436 Advanced News and Feature Writing
To successfully complete the Professional Writing certificate, each of the courses applied to the certificate must be passed with a C or better.
You may not complete the certificate if you are an English major with a concentration in Professional Writing, but English majors with Literature, Creative Writing, and Teacher Certification concentrations are eligible.
