Sydney B. Duncan
Associate Professor, Department Chair
B.A., Roanoke College
Sydney B. Duncan earned an M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. She joined the English faculty at Frostburg State University in 2006. Since then, she has published both critical articles and poetry while serving on a number of university committees.
She was one of the founding members of the Learning Green, Living Green campus sustainability initiative and has served on the group’s executive board. Her interest in environmental and sustainability-related issues led her to found E=(LG)2, the nation’s only known student-written and student-edited magazine on sustainability. As part of their work in ENGL 402, Editing and Production, students write, edit, review, layout, and produce the magazine. She is interested in many aspects of experiential learning, and students in her courses have worked with local clients to produce brochures and other documents. Clients have included the Family Crisis Resource Center, the Allegany County Animal Shelter, and Ark of Hope Animal Rescue, among others.
Dr. Duncan is active in science fiction and fantasy scholarship. She is Second Vice President, a board member, and one of the conference organizers for the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts. She is an advisor to Frostburg’s Alpha Gamma Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity based on scouting principles. She currently serves as chair of the English Department.
