John Doe, Department of Geography, Frostburg State University,
Frostburg, MD 21532, john.doe@wmich.edu. Human impact on the Georges'
Creek watershed, Allegany County, Maryland.
For many years, the poor water
quality of George's Creek in western Maryland has been primarily attributed
to discharged waste associated with coal mining operations and paper production.
Soil erosion caused by logging has also been identified as a culprit.
However, this paper will show that the degradation of George's Creek water
quality has been caused primarily by rapid urbanization in the Creek's
watershed, particularly the growth of "McMansions," golf resorts,
and the emergence of elite, Disney-like resorts for the wealthy. Building
permits issued since 1990 and data on the impact of new construction types
will be compared with data on industrial discharges.
Keywords: urbanization, land-use, industrial geography
[Authors should carefully edit and proofread the abstracts they submit.]

The Local Dimensions of Climate Change: The Role of Universities
and Students
Climate Change is a Local Phenomenon. All locales contribute to
the greenhouse gas emissions and land-use changes that cause climate
