Honors Seminars for Fall 2004: "Comics
and American Culture" taught by Dr. Kevin Kehrwald
Comics and American Culture takes
the medium of comics as its overt subject matter, but it is, at heart,
an American Studies course. The course is interdisciplinary, thematic,
and self-reflective. It combines the disciplines of History, Political
Science, Art, Literature, Film and Mass Communications.
"Genocide in the Modern World" taught by
Dr. Keith Schlegel This interdisciplinary, writing intensive, six
credit course investigates genocide in the twentieth century. The
course incorporates historical antecedents and consequences; political,
social, and cultural causes and effects; literary responses; ethical,
theological and philosophical implications, and an inquiry into meaning.
Special attention will be devoted to the Holocaust. This course counts
as both ENGL312 and IDIS491.
Walk Like A Penguin
In honor of FSU's new poster "Be Safe on Ice, Walk Like a Penguin,"
the Honors Program is hosting a Penguin Party. The party will be held
on Wednesday, March 17 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Prizes will
be awarded for the best penguin walk and best penguin costume. Ice
cream, St. Patrick's Day fare, and other party food will be served.
Email suggestions for the party to honorsprog@frostburg.edu.
UROS Teams Selected
The Honors Program sponsors Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROS)
for Honors Program students and faculty. The following were selected:
Dr. Megan Bradley and Kelly Murray will be detecting
deception in children by measuring heart rates and observing behavior.
They will also be working to decrease test anxiety suffered by children.
Dr. Linda Lyon and Rebecca Stewart will be researching
topics in Ethnobotany. Their research entails preserving the knowledge
of medicinal plant uses. Dr. Lyon and Rebecca will also be doing an
inventory of the FSU arboretum. An inventory of the arboretum has
not been conducted since the late 1970s.
Dr. Scott Johnson will be working with Brandon Hoover
on issues regarding patriotism. They will research Supreme Court cases
and have developed a hypothesis that the Court rules in favor of the
nation's interests and symbols during periods of crisis. They have
already begun their research and plan to present their analysis at
the Northeastern Political Science meeting in November of 2004.
Congratulations to the UROS teams.
