Introduction

International Studies is an undergraduate major at Frostburg State University supported by

  • the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social & Behavioral Sciences
    (departments of Modern Languages and Literature, Geography, History, Political Science and Philosophy), and

  • the College of Business, Engineering, and Computational & Mathematical Sciences
    (departments of Accounting, Economics, Management and Marketing/Finance).

The B.A. International Studies Major is interdisciplinary in nature and requires students to acquire proficiency in a foreign language.

A group of foundation (core) courses acquaints students with the changing nature of the world and how these changes present new and complex challenges for those concerned with global, national, and local issues. Core courses include work in international studies, history, geography, economics, and political science.

The program also allows students to develop specialized knowledge in one of four specific fields of International Studies: International Business, International Politics, International Economics, or International Development.

Students who successfully complete the major will:

  • Appreciate and understand foreign cultures, values, and institutions;
  • be prepared to live and work in a world where many important political, business, and economic goals cannot be attained without the involvement and cooperation of foreign societies, their governments, and international institutions;
  • acquire specialized knowledge in one of three fields of International Studies;
  • learn to speak and write in at least one modern foreign language;
  • acquire the skills necessary to conduct research in their area of specialization;
  • be prepared for more advanced study at the graduate level or for entry-level professional positions in government, international business and banking, international organizations, or other entities involved in international affairs.
