Is
It For Me?
The Liberal Studies program offers a broadly-based curriculum and a wide
range of options in lieu of the more specialized coursework required in
other major programs. Although 48 credit hours are required to major in
Liberal Studies, the expanded (hence "liberal") choices permit students
to design much of their own educational structure beyond the General Education
Program (GEP).
The
Liberal Studies Program invites you to explore your purposes with considerable
flexibility; it also impels you to inquire broadly across the curriculum.
The independence fostered by the self-designed major carries with it an
obligation to assume primary responsibility for your own learning. The
program is not for everyone, especially not for students who lack self-discipline
and who require a high degree of structure.
This
program serves three categories of students at FSU:
-
Mature students who have previously acquired through
experience and coursework an area of specialized education (e.g. technical
or professional training). The Liberal Studies Program especially addresses
the needs of non-traditional transfer students to FSU.
-
Students who prefer intellectual breadth and diversity
of coursework to the depth offered by the other academic majors.
- Students
who wish to develop self-designed majors, typically building
upon minors, certificate options, and interdisciplinary gatherings of
courses.

How Do
I Proceed?
If you are not currently enrolled at Frostburg State University, you will
first need to apply for admission. An admissions counselor will then evaluate
any previously earned academic credits. You should become familiar with
the university catalog, especially those sections governing the General
Education Program and graduation requirements. You should next e-mail,
call or write me to request an Interest Sheet. When I receive your Interest Sheet, I will examine your record and direct you to a Liberal Studies advisor who will schedule a personal interview to discuss whether the Liberal Studies Program will suit your
interests and needs.
