Sample Proposal III: "Creative Dramatics"
Proposed B.S. in Liberal Studies

Cynthia Herman 222-22-2222
Liberal Studies Course of Study

Title: Creative Dramatics (The title must not duplicate any existing FSU major programs)

Self-Statement (All self-statements must briefly and clearly address how your planned course of study will contribute your life plans)

I chose to study creative dramatics because I would like to work with children in theatre. Both of these areas are my passion. I love to work with children, but I thought I would have to choose between teaching and theatre. I took a creative dramatics class at Frostburg and found out that I can do both. I decided to take as many classes that I could involving both theatre and children. This would prepare me for graduate school to get my certification in teaching. Ideally I would like to teach preschool through third grade because these children are the most impressionable and learning through theatre helps them to get to know each other and builds their self-esteem. I learned that Frostburg does not offer a BA in creative dramatics, but does offer a Liberal Studies program that lets me tailor a course of study to fit my needs. From my personal experience, creating a course of study for yourself is a wonderful way to learn. Not only am I taking classes, but I am also looking into my chosen field and deciding which classes would best suit my needs.

I looked under the early childhood education requirement, and I have taken many of the classes that are offered in the category including art and music for children. I also took several theater and movement classes to give me an idea about how children move at a young age and what their bodies are beginning to do. I plan to do my Capstone in the area of theatre with the help of the advisors in that area. I will be assisting in stage managing and scene design, required to set up a production. This will be helpful because I can then organize a show for the children to participate in at school. The education field is changing, and there are new formats being used all the time. Creative dramatics is one of the best ways to keep children interested in school and help them fit in with other people. All children should be given an opportunity to try new things and learn in a fashion that will help them excel.
