The first
step is to complete the Liberal Studies
Major Plan of Study Chart, indicating which courses you
will apply to each of the four categories (general education, liberal
core, focus area, and electives). Your advisor will help you distribute
courses appropriately.
If you choose
to design your own interdisciplinary focus, you must present a coherent
rationale in prose, explaining the inter-relations among the Focus Area
courses and the summative quality of the Capstone (see attached examples).
General Education Program Indicate in the left column of the
chart the courses you have taken and those you plan to take to satisfy
FSU's general education requirements in both components:
1. basic
skills (freshman composition and advanced composition; mathematics;
and HEED100: Personal Wellness) and
2. liberal
arts distribution, including two liberal arts courses taken as
GEP electives.
You must
obtain a C or better in "basic skills" classes (11 hours), and
you must pass (D or better) courses in the "liberal arts distribution"
(minimum 29 hours).

Liberal Core ("C" or better required for
all courses). In the middle column you should list (from the top down)
1. Which
communication course you have completed or plan to complete
in addition to GEP requirements: CMST 102 (formerly CMAT 102), Introduction
to Human Communication, OR an additional 300-level composition class,
selected either from among those courses that satisfy General Education
(ENGL 300, 308, 309, 310, 312, 330, 338, 339) or from other writing
courses ENGL 336 (Journalistic Writing), 334 (Creative Writing,
Fiction), 335 (Creative Writing, Poetry), 360 (Creative Non-Fiction).
2. Those
courses you will apply to completing the 18 hours of second-tier
liberal arts distribution. Unlike courses taken to satisfy the
GEP, these may be selected from a wide range, of any credit hour designation,
at any level; however, do attend to prerequisites and take note that
for graduation you will need a total of at least 39 credit hours at
the 300-400 level. You must take at least one course within each of
the following:
- in
arts, from courses in ART, MUSA, MUSC, DANC (former PHEC
dance courses), THEA (former CMAT theater courses); ENGL 334, 335,
or 336 may also qualify, unless used for Communication Arts
- in
humanities, from courses in HIST, PHIL, ENGL literature,
or MDFL literature courses
- in
natural sciences, from BIOL, PHSC, PHYS, CHEM, ENES, or GEOG
(physical geography courses only)
- in
social sciences, courses from POSC, SOCI, SOWK, ECON, PSYC,
or GEOG (human geography courses only).
Focus Area ("C" or better required for all
courses). The Liberal Studies Focus Area represents the academic concentration.
It may be composed in either of two ways:
1. By
completing a pre-existing curricular structure (e.g., a minor or certificate
program), supplemented, if needed, by additional hours to total 24,
OR
2. By
designing and defending in prose an integrated array of
related courses (24 hours min.) from different disciplines.
In addition,
for both options, you must take a "capstone" course that unifies
the Focus Area or that applies skills from that area. Your Capstone
may take the form of a 3+ credit-hour seminar, a practicum, an internship,
a guided reading or independent study course at the 400-level. For Focus
Areas that transcend disciplinary boundaries or where Liberal Studies
students lack prerequisites for appropriate Capstone courses, LBST 499
may be offered.

Focus Area Conditions:
1.
The Focus Area must include at least 24 hours of coursework, no fewer
than 15 of which must be at the 300-400 level;
2. In
addition, the Capstone must be worth no less than 3 hours at the upper-level
(300-400);
3. No
course may be counted more than once even if it could theoretically
fulfill requirements in more than one column;
4. If
a Focus Area does not complete a minor or other established curricular
structure, it must be interdisciplinary; the plan of study must address
in prose your purpose and goals for this major and how you plan to fulfill
the requirements.
5. All
Focus Area designations and Capstone selections must be approved by
the Liberal Studies coordinator.
Special
Arrangement for Majors Focusing in Education
Because
the department of Educational Professions offers a professional program
that must meet certification guide-lines, the department must protect
the integrity of its curriculum. Therefore, students may not use more
than 12 hours from the Educational Professions department to fulfill a
Liberal Studies Focus Area. That is, no more than 12 hours can be combined
from EDUC, ELED, ECED, or REED courses to apply to the 24-hour focus in
LBST. The Capstone course may, however, be added in one of those disciplines
above the 12-hour ceiling.

Reminder:
List on the "Plan of Study" chart all courses you will need
for graduation: these will include transfer credits applied, courses you
have completed or are currently enrolled in, as well as courses you plan
to take and when you plan to take them. Use this model: for year 2002,
021 (intersession), 022 (spring semester), 023 (summer sessions), 024
(fall semester).
When completion
of your program is in sight, you must apply to the Registrar to confirm
that you will fulfill all requirements for graduation. These include:
the GEP (basic requirements and distribution), all University requirements
itemized in the Undergraduate Catalog, and all Liberal Studies requirements.
