Naming the Frostburg State University library the "Lewis
J. Ort Library" was unanimously recommended by the University
president, faculty,staff and students and approved by the Board
of Regents in 1990.
Mr. Ort, frequently referred to as "Mr.Western Maryland,"
is often lauded for his exemplary humanitarian service, which
has included raising millions of dollars for hospitals, burn centers,
churches, orphanages, and new technologies.

Mr. Ort founded Ort's, Inc. and Fibred, Inc., both
of which produced baked goods and were based in Cumberland, MD.
Mr. Ort came from a long line of bakers and was an authority on
blending flour and soy fiber, which is often used in diet breads.
A native of Allegany County, MD, Mr. Ort exemplified
entrepreneurship and altruism.
