Interlibrary Loan Instructions, Restrictions, and Details
The Interlibrary Loan Office (ILL) exists to provide students,
faculty and staff with materials that the Ort Library does not
own. ILL can obtain many materials, including books, periodical
articles, dissertations, microforms, government documents, technical
reports, films, and more.
Some materials that ILL cannot obtain are entire issues of journals,
reference materials, old (published prior to 1800) or rare books,
software, record albums, audio or video cassettes, and other
forms of multimedia.
To request materials, place an electronic request from Research
Port. Be sure to check University of Maryland and Affiliated
Institutions' online catalog (catalog
USMAI) before submitting your request.
For a book, search catalogUSMAI to see if the item is held at
a University System of Maryland Library (USM) and therefore
available through the Hold Request function.
For a periodical article, first check FSU holdings for the journal
title to ascertain whether the specific volume is held in the
Library. Also consult the relevant full text databases that
FSU subscribes to through Research
Port to see if a copy of the article is available electronically.
ILL staff will return your request if they determine that you
can obtain the material in the Library yourself.
Materials are usually received within two weeks. Materials are
usually supplied free of charge. However, when submitting an
ILL request, you may be asked to specify the maximum cost you
are willing to pay per request in case there is a fee charged
by the supplying library.
You will be notified by phone or e-mail when your request arrives.
During regular office hours (Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30) materials may
be picked up at the ILL office. Materials may be picked up at
the Circulation desk at other times. You may request that your
articles be sent to your on-campus office or residence hall
via campus mail.
You may submit as many requests as necessary for your research
needs. However, ILL Guidelines for a borrowing institution (FSU)
state that a library MAY NOT request copies of more than 5 articles
from the same journal title published within the most recent
5 years. The user will be notified if an article cannot be supplied
due to this restriction, and possible alternate methods for
obtaining the item will be provided.
For more information about these services or about
the status of specific interlibrary loan requests, contact the
ILL office.
