The Power of Differentiated Instruction in Mathematics

Implementation and Impact of a National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) Course Redesign Project in College Algebra

Lane Center 202 Tom Crawford, Paula Kessler, and Joseph Mason
College After decades of delivering college algebra in a traditional format with student success slightly above the national benchmark, Hagerstown Community College has adopted an NCAT model and re-designed this course to reduce lecture time, increase student engagement, and decrease costs. Student learning in the redesign format vs. the traditional format is measured using the same final exam supplement, the CAAP mathematics exam, and student success is measured using National Community College Benchmark Project norms. The redesign process, challenges and how they are addressed, are also presented.

  Finding Cantor's Infinities in Poetry

Lane Center 140 Eileen C. McGraw
General Interest Too many students view mathematics as a set of formulas, not ideas. This talk is based on a classroom activity that encourages students to interpret poets' usage of eternity or infinity with reference to the ideas of Cantor. I will show how the class develops an understanding of Cantor's work, and then will present portions of poems that can be more deeply understood by applying Cantor's ideas

  Three Methods of Factoring Ax2 + Bx + C

Lane Center 141 Robert Forsythe
High School/College We will be factoring several trinomials, using three different methods. We will then reflect on our experiences, and discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of each method. Presentation will be lecture and "small" group style.
