Geometry in Narnia: The Cylinder, the Cone, and the Sphere |

Though most solids studied in high school geometry have volume formulas that are intuitively obvious, the sphere does not. A proposed formula based on a reasonable assumption will be shown to be in error through data collection and a line of best fit. The correct formula will then be derived using known formulas and demonstrated through models. Finally, the solution to a problem that I have only seen in calculus books - the volume of a partially-filled sphere - becomes approachable using nothing but algebra and the techniques used to develop the formula for the volume of a sphere. |

Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills in Finite Mathematics in the Areas of Statistics and Nutrition Using Excel |
| |
|
| Lane Center 202 |
Kameswari Tekumalla and Lynette Steele |
| High School/College |
The presentation demonstrates how to apply critical thinking skills in Finite Mathematics in the areas of Nutrition and Statistics. Application of Excel in these areas not only provides hands-on experience in solving real-world problems but also helps students to better understand the mathematical concepts while increasing their familiarity with Microsoft Excel. |

The Trials and Tribulations of a First-Year Middle School Math Teacher |

|
| Lane Center 141 |
Donnie Thomas |
| Middle School |
Through personal anecdotes, I will try to walk participants through the very eventful life of a first-year Math teacher. I will include things I have tried that have worked and those that have failed. Emphasis will be placed on a few key areas: beginning the year, differentiated instruction and assessment, block vs. traditional scheduling, basic skills, and perseverance (both for students and the new teacher). |

Can a piece of paper have 3 sides? Or even 4 or more? Yes it can! See how this can happen. We will make several samples and show how these can be used for fun, art, learning and advertising. We will see how the Mobuis strip has been used in art and focus on 3- and 4- sided papers, including the illusive hexa-hexaflexagon. |
